5 Top Tips To Make Bedtime Easier For Parents

If you are a parent, you know that bedtime is one of the most stressful parts of the day. Kids just don’t want to shut their eyes and count those sheep. Nope, they would much rather watch TV or play with their favorite toys until an ungodly hour of the night. Parents can’t let this happen because small kids are terrible when they are cranky. Plus, so are moms and dads!

As you know, clicking your fingers or making a wish doesn’t work. Unless you tackle the situation head-on, nothing will change and the whole family will suffer. Sadly, we all know parents who fight against the tide, and they don’t set a stellar example. Let’s face it – no one wants to be that mom or dad.

But, what can you do to change the way kids think about sleep? It isn’t as if they are mature, reasonable adults. The key is to build a routine and stick with it through thick and thin. Here is a selection of routine-based tips to keep in mind which should come in handy.

Deal With Sleep Troubles

The idea of going to sleep isn’t a simple one for children. Young kids always have and will continue to have sleep anxiety. It may be a fear of missing out, a fear of the dark, or sleep apnea. Don’t worry; the last one isn’t an Inception-style problem! The point is that kids have trouble falling and staying asleep because there are numerous issues which impact their brain. Most parents, because it’s common, decide not to act and wait before they see a doctor. Sorry, but it’s a bad move as the percentage of children who work out sleep problems on their own is low. Until you tackle the problem head-on, it will never go away. How you do it depends on the situation, but, as a general rule, talking to a pediatrician helps. Should the issue be severe, a specialized sleep therapist may be the only option.

Set A Strict Routine

During the week, going to bed on time is easy. In fact, it’s mandatory because you and your partner want time off before the rat race begins in the morning! However, when sleep experts say a routine needs maintaining, they aren’t only talking about weekdays. Unfortunately, it means weekends too. Now, Saturday and Sunday mornings are the only days you get to sleep past 7 am. Still, allowing kids to lie-in past their usual wake up time can impact the rest of the week. Then, on a Wednesday night during the week, your son or daughter may refuse to stick to the schedule. Whether it’s a Monday at the start of the week or a Friday at the end, their bedtime should be consistent.

Take Toilet Precautions

Older kids can’t wear diapers, but younger ones can because they are in transition. Yes, potty training your child without the need for diapers, or an accident, is the Holy Grail of parenting. But, don’t let your fantasy get in the way of reality. During the day, a child can tell their parents they need to go to the toilet. That way, accidents are easy to avoid. At night, their needs are involuntary and they can go without knowing. And, there is nothing worse to waking up to find your kid has gone number 1/2 during the night. The first step is to use diapers while they get used to potty training, and the second is to buy the right ones. At www.mothersandmore.org, there is a post which lists the factors to consider before handing over your hard-earned cash. Also, you can ask friends or family members with experience for diaper-buying advice. Just don’t do it over the table while you eat dinner!

Think About A Snack Attack

Eating before bed is a delicate balance. As kids are younger and use up more energy, they may need to eat before bed. This is particularly true when they have a routine based on a pre-bedtime meal. However, a large snack requires the body to use lots of energy to break down the food. And, when that happens, it is likely to interfere with REMS. If your child doesn’t complain about being hungry, don’t offer a snack before bed as the likelihood is it will do more harm than good. But, if they wake up during the night and ask for food, implement supper into their bedtime routine. The trick is to give them something light and easy to digest, such as fruit or porridge. Also, these foods have plenty of helpful nutrients which act as fuel through the night. Besides those examples, www.webmd.com lists graham crackers as a tasty yet healthy substitute.

Regulate The Room’s Temperature

Everyone sleeps better when the temp in the room is pleasant. In layman’s terms, it means it should be cool but not cold. Moreover, it needs to be warm yet not hot. Regulating the temperature of a room is never easy, especially if it’s too big or too small. Still, it is possible with a radiator which has a variety of settings. Turning the heat to the middle option is often an excellent way to stop the room from getting too hot. Plus, don’t forget about the role of the blankets and comforter. Usually, the top trick is to dress your child in normal PJs and resist the urge to splurge. Then, use the sheets as a means to retain heat during the night. If they get too hot, they can kick them off and allow the draft to cool them at night.

Finally, don’t forget to remove electrical appliances from the bedroom. Experts know that electronic devices give off radiation which the body picks up on at night. When this happens, it tricks the brain into waking up, which interrupts sleep. Therefore, the fewer items in your child’s bedroom, the less impact the radiation will have on their sleep patterns. Yep, that even goes for the TV on the wall or the personal stereo on the bedside table.

Beauty Products You Might Want To Avoid

Most ladies like to spend money on the latest beauty products to ensure they always look stunning. However, there are some types of items that can cause a lot of damage, and so it’s sensible to avoid them in most instances. This article will draw your attention towards some of the things you’ll want to consider the next time you head out to your local beauty store to stock up on the latest brands. These items don’t cause problems for everyone, but they can have adverse effects, and that’s why you need to be careful. With a bit of luck, after reading the advice from this page, you will make better decisions in the future.

Perfumed moisturizers

Some people have no issues when it comes to using moisturizers that contain perfume for fragrance. However, those with sensitive skin can sometimes have an adverse reaction to those products. In many instances, they irritate the surface of the skin, and they can even encourage eczema to form. Those who have problems with those items tend to notice red blotches on their skin that can sometimes burn and cause pain. If you have any concerns about products of that nature, just be sure to read all the information on the packaging before using them on your skin. It’s always sensible to use a small amount in a “test area,” and then wait five minutes to see what happens before covering yourself in the cream.

Just be sure to look for moisturizers that say things like:

  • All natural ingredients
  • Perfume free
  • Fragrance free

Shampoo containing sulfate

There are lots of reasons you need to be careful when it comes to the shampoo you use on your hair. Firstly, some products contain ingredients that can damage the hair in many different ways. Items that use sulfate often require some research before you use them on your head. According to writers from sites like https://soundbodylife.com/best-sulfate-free-shampoos-list/, research proves that sulfate can strip the hair of its color damage the hair, and cause skin irritations.

Thankfully, most shampoos do not use sulfate, and so you just need to select a brand that only uses natural and harmless ingredients. The internet is your friend when it comes to discovering the best items and getting the best prices. So, make sure you shop around! Also, be sure to ask your hairdresser about the products they plan to use before letting them loose with your hair. Some professionals know less about this issue than the average lady on the street.

Link

Anything containing formaldehyde

Lots of cosmetics companies use formaldehyde in their products to limit bacteria growth according to http://www.foxnews.com/health/2015/07/27/. That means the beauty items you purchase will stay in good condition for longer than they otherwise would have done. However, apart from being potentially linked to nasal and nasopharyngeal cancers, the chemical can also cause a lot of irritation and adverse effects. Some of the most common products that can contain formaldehyde include:

  • Nail polish
  • Body wash
  • Conditioners
  • Cleansers
  • Eye shadows

So, make sure you always read the small print on the back of the packaging, and never pick up an item if it contains that dangerous chemical.

Permanent and semi-permanent hair dyes

According to the National Cancer Institute, many permanent and semi-permanent hair dyes contain more than 5,000 different chemicals. A small number of those ingredients can cause cancer and other illnesses. More than a third of women over the age of eighteen use those products every year, and around 10% of men do the same thing. For that reason, it’s vital that you take the time to research the subject and ensure you never place yourself at risk. Ideally, you should only use products on your hair that don’t contain aromatic amines. That was proven to cause cancer in animals during the 1970s, and experts have many concerns about the effect it has on humans.

As you can see from the information on this page, some of those beauty products on the high-street probably do more harm than good. Considering that, it’s about time we all started to pay more attention to the chemicals we use on our bodies. For whatever reason, most people seem to think that if it’s available at their local store, then it must be safe. Sadly, that is rarely the case, and so we all need to take action to ensure we educate ourselves (and our friends) about the dangers we face. Share this post with people you know, and maybe you’ll save them some pain or discomfort in the future.

Making A Short Diet A Long Term Gain

tape-fork-diet-health

When it comes to losing weight, there are so any routes that we can take. The diet industry is booming right now, and it can be hard to know where to start – just because we are spoiled for choice and have so many options to pick from. But when it comes to really keeping the weight off, what do we need to be doing? What are the diets that we need to consider for the long-run, and not just as a quick fix? And how do we maintain a healthy lifestyle whilst losing weight?

macaron-2462247_1920

Keep It Off

When you’re losing weight, a lot of how much you lose is attributed to  what you’re eating and how often you’re eating it. A few treats or snacks here and there add up, especially if you are on a low calorie diet – your body will hold onto these foods more so during this period. Exercise comes into the mix here, as you need to be exerting more calories than you are consuming in order to see progression quickly.

Dieting – For Long Term Goals

Dieting is pretty simple once you know how. A lot of people spend thousands on finding out the secrets, when it’s just basic maths – the less you consume, the less that you will weigh. The one problem that most have when dieting is that, if embarking on a low-calorie diet that requires them to take a week off to let their body recover, they think that they are entitled to eat whatever they like. Dieting doesn’t work like that; it’s a constant process that will need adhering to to get the results that you want to achieve. If you get bored with what you are doing, you only need to do a quick search online to look for alternatives; The Military Diet has substitutions found at https://defendyourhealthcare.us/military-diet-substitutions and others are easy enough to find. Don’t be tempted to fall back to old habits when you are dieting – this is a period of forming a new relationship with food.

exercise-1581583_1920

Maintain
When you start dieting, it’s a good time to take on other commitments as well – although you shouldn’t be starting everything at once, as it can be quite overwhelming. Putting pressure on yourself to start an exercise regime such as one found at http://miamiherald.typepad.com/worklifebalancingact/2009/12/10-low-cost-low-effort-ways-to-fit-exercise-into-your-work-life-balance.html can seem like a big leap to take, but it’s one that should flow naturally in with what you are doing. There will be a surge of energy that you have once your body starts kicking into gear, and the release of endorphins that you get from doing gentle exercise will only increase this. When following some very low calorie diets, you may find that exercise is restricted for the first couple of weeks, but don’t let this put you off doing this healthy activity at any point in the future; it’s important that you keep on top of your physical fitness through raising your heart rate and making your muscles work as well as getting it to your ideal weight.

Creative Ways to Save on Electricity That You Definitely Need to Try

pexels-photo-256307

We’ve covered a lot of interesting tips and tricks on how to save on energy bills here on Love2EncourageYou. We even have our own Frugal Living section with more tips on how to save, along with tricks on finding discounts and deals. Every small saving you make today will add up to a substantial amount at the end of the month, so they are indeed worth making.

There are further ways to lower your energy bills and limit your electricity consumption. In this part, we’re going to take a look at the most creative ways to save on electricity that you definitely need to try.

Look at Alternatives

In the old days, we were usually stuck with a single service provider and a limited set of plans to choose from. Today, however, the energy market is more competitive than ever. Aside from more plans and competitive offers, there are also more players or service providers to choose from. Going for the most affordable plan will help you save more than 50% on your monthly energy bills alone.

To make it even better, there are tools that will help you get detailed plans in just a few seconds. You can, for instance, get electric rates from multiple companies based on where your property is located. Simply enter your ZIP code and hit Search; web applications such as DirectEnergyRates.net will automatically search for available plans and display the information on your screen.

It is also worth noting that actively asking for a discount could often lead to an additional discount of up to 10% being added to your current or new plan. That’s more money to save every month!

Be Mindful of How You Pay

The way you pay your electricity bills could also affect how much you’re actually paying every month. Certain banks charge a fee whenever you pay energy bills through them. Other banks or credit cards offer rewards in various forms. The latter is definitely the way to go since you will be able to save more in the long run.

Cashbacks are the most common form of rewards, usually given by select banks and credit card issuers. Direct discounts and the lack of fee – that’s a $5/month saving at minimum – are also worth pursuing.

pexels-photo-213162

Start Using Smart Appliances

This last tip requires a bit of an investment, but it is an investment worth making. Home appliances are getting smarter by the day. Some of them can now connect to your home wireless network and be accessible remotely. Other gadgets can be set to automatically run certain functions and maintain high energy efficiency.

These smart appliances, including smart thermostats and the main smart system for the house, can actually lower energy consumption by 40% on average. Scheduling alone can help bring down energy consumption while maintaining the same level of comfort and convenience. Add the fact that smart appliances are becoming more affordable, and we have the perfect recipe for maximum energy efficiency.

As always, we’re delivering the tips that you can apply right away; the ones we covered in this article are no different. Give them a try and see how much further you can reduce your energy costs in one month.

Head outside and take inventory of what you have in place. See where you might be able to add or remove pieces. Landscaping is a great DIY project, but it takes time. Shed Makeover

A shed makeover is the perfect DIY project. Grab some paint, slap a new coat on and add trim. Head inside the shed and clean the floors and empty it out. Organize the items and get rid of what you no longer need. If you clean it enough, you can sit in there and read; also turning it into a summer house. Take your time making it pleasant, so you can enjoy it when the weather improves and temps are cooler.

Headboard

Does your bed need a little updating? Think about adding a headboard or improving the one your have. For a warmer look, put together wood planks and place them behind the bed. There are a lot of different ways to add whatever style and color to your bedroom. A headboard will add depth to the room, and you’ll love the personal touch it gives your bedroom.

Conclusion

Fantastic Tools To Help Your Child Develop At Home

learn-2105410_1920

Education is one of the most vital parts of a child’s upbringing. School learning is undeniably a crucial factor. However, it’s equally important that you provide your son or daughter with the best opportunities in other areas too. Frankly, your home life is the perfect place to start.

Of course, you may need to help your child with their academic studies at various stages throughout their school tutoring. However, there’s more to life than purely academic development. You can promote the development of equally key skills from the comfort of your home. Here are some of the best ways to do just that.

oekaki-2009817_1920

Arts & Crafts

Children shouldn’t only learn the fundamentals of reading and writing. As a parent, you should always look to embrace their creative sides at every given opportunity. Arts and crafts are a cheap form of entertainment while they also encourage creative flair.

elementary-school-1332472_1920

Moreover, those crafts also underline the sentiments that hard work pays off. Whether it’s these paper bowl jellyfish or another craft isn’t overly important. As long as the project is age appropriate, it will be a rewarding method. Best of all, it gives you a chance to participate and track their personal growth.

 music-lessons-435105_1920

Music

Music plays a crucial role in all of our lives, and that spark of development starts at a very young age. Encouraging your kid to play music rather than just listen can bring a host of benefits. Guitars, keyboards, and other instruments may seem like expensive gifts. But the years of entertainment they’ll provide ensures that they offer value back for the money you’ve invested.

Another great thing about encouraging music at home is that you can use both autonomous learning and guided learning. In turn, that should provide your child with a comprehensive experience. Given that musical talent has been linked to academic progress too, the incentives to encourage this could not be greater.

Interactive Video Games

Most kids respond far better when they are actively participating in their learning activities. Meanwhile, computer games are a firm favorite for children of all ages. So why not combine the two with educational titles that develop academic skills as well as computer literacy?

These popular ABCYA games for 5th graders are particularly good examples that bring a wealth of benefits. However, there are many more titles aimed at kids of all ages. If the kids are having fun and interacting while learning, you will see great results.

nature-2206200_1920

Garden Activities

Learning shouldn’t simply be about remembering and reciting facts. Problem solving, logical thinking, and self-discovery are all important factors too. Likewise, it’s imperative that your child is encouraged to lead a healthy lifestyle as well. Utilizing the garden with treasure hunts and other games is one of the best ways to do this. Who knows what exciting and unusual discoveries they will encounter?

Jungle gyms, trampolines, and sporting activities will also enhance their development. Those rewards can range from communication skills to improved coordination. When combined with the tasks above and strong academic learning, their opportunities to develop will be greater than ever.

Save The Lost: Glow in the Dark YOUTH Group Game

stl-key-1920-72-res-no-top-text.jpg

Have you ever hoped to connect with your teens or the kids in the youth group on important topics like Salvation but weren’t sure how to break the ice? Here’s a unique and super fun way to do just that! Introducing the game: SAVE THE LOST! This fast paced action game is fully interactive for youth to get their energy out in a dark environment with glow in the dark components and exciting game play for all to enjoy! It plays somewhat similar to a capture the flag style activity, but much more impactful and significant when it comes to using in a youth group at church or at a camp. This fun family oriented game can be a huge hit at birthday parties, family reunions and block parties or graduations.

OFFICIAL RULES – Learn how it works: https://www.savethelostgame.com/the-game.html

IMG_7347IMG_7348

My son and I enjoyed sharing this game and donating it to our youth group at church. They LOVED Save The Lost! They enjoyed it so much they want me to buy more of the wrist bands to add even more players and expand the challenge! They played it again at a youth LOCK-IN event during Spring Break too and said it was a blast! An AWESOME way to help kids connect with the truth that Jesus is the LIGHT and is the WAY to be SAVED.

With the lure of social media and video games, it can be hard to get youth off the couch and active. It can also be difficult to get them to focus on their Bible study when all they want to do is go play with their friends.

This new, glow-in-the-dark adventure game helps solve both these problems. “Save the Lost” gets youth to experience Christian principles while giving them a reason to have physically active fun.

To no surprise, I’ve heard the game has been a big hit with youth leaders and students alike—reflecting on profound Biblical principles that teach about avoiding temptation, finding redemption and showing them how to help others do the same— all while being a delightfully exciting and fun game to play.

“The strategy that took place in the game involved everybody, and everybody was playing together,” says Jeff VanWagoner, another youth leader involved in testing the game. “Everybody would strategize as a whole group against the Tempters—regardless of whether or not they’re friends.”

Here are some other comments and testimonies from the Christian youth leaders who tried this game, Save the Lost:

“I know you may be skeptical and think, “OH, Another cheesy Christian game!” but let me tell you my kids LOVED it! I am a youth pastor in the heart of Hollywood, CA and my kids had a blast with this” — Michael B, Hollywood CA

“We used this game for our church youth group activity with boys aged 13-17 and they all had a fantastic time. There are multiple variations on the structure of the game which allowed them to pick and choose which they enjoyed the most. The technology worked amazing when we used it in a darkened gymnasium, and also outside as it turned dusk. The message of the game was evident to the boys, but not overbearing” — Laurn V, Riverton, UT

“This is the best game I have ever owned! I’m a youth leader at my Church…so I ordered it and I was amazed by how great this game is!! No joke my youth all loved this game and have discussed playing all Sundays after church! — Andrew A, Rio Roco, AZ

I highly recommend purchasing this game for your next youth group event, family reunion or as a great way to have fun and be a positive impact at your son or daughter’s graduation party coming up! Paul King is the creator and teacher for this game and has done an amazing job on customer service – even helping me find additional items to go with the game when we wanted to expand the number of tempters for a bigger challenge. He is awesome and will be more than happy to assist you with anything your youth group, homeschool group, or Christian school needs to enjoy the game and make an impact on the lives of today’s youth.

Blessings to you as you embark on this exciting journey together to SAVE THE LOST!

Smiley Happy Children: Top Tips For Healthy Family Teeth

child-476507_1920(1)

Ensuring your children have healthy teeth throughout their childhood and into their adult life is an important part of being a parent. Anyone that has suffered from a severe toothache will never want their child to experience the same pain. Good practice with regards dental hygiene is something we all want to pass on to our kids, and it can start at a young age.

It’s all in the routine

Developing a brushing and flossing routine while your child is young teaches them that it’s a very normal practice of day-to-day life, and something which can benefit mom and dad too. Cleaning teeth when you all wake up, and again before you all go to sleep, makes it far more difficult to forget, and it cements it as part of their morning and nighttime routines. Allow them to brush their teeth on their own with supervision as they get older, maybe trying to make it into a fun activity too.

Get regular dental checkups

Everyone in the family needs regular dental checkups throughout their life. Not only are they checking for cavities and gum health, but in children, they will check that their teeth are developing properly as infants, that there’s enough room in their jaw, and that there will be no problems further down the line. Taking your child to the dentist from a young age teaches them that there is nothing scary about a dental hygiene check, and so it will help to establish good practices as they get older.

Develop your home remedy repertoire

Teething problems, abscesses, and toothache are common in many households, and sometimes it’s not possible to visit a dental practitioner immediately after onset. Having a repertoire of home remedies allows you to treat painful problems in your kids and yourself without having to necessarily see a dentist. Websites such as https://homeremedyshop.com/ are full of great ideas for how to deal with all manner of dental problems with just the things you keep in your pantry.

Keep sugary drinks to a minimum

Avoiding teaching bad habits to kids is one of the best ways to ensure their dental health into adulthood. By offering too many fizzy, sugary drinks, sweets, or chips, not only does it put the health of their teeth at risk immediately, but also in later life. Water or milk are the best drinks, especially while their teeth are still developing, but also as they get older.

Be a good role model

Good dental hygiene habits start really young, and they’ll pick most of their habits up from mom and dad. After all, they look up to you both and tend to want to copy you. If they see you brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing after meals, and drinking water, not soda, they’re going to learn all the right lessons from you as you teach them the importance of good dental health.
Teaching your kids the right lessons for good dental hygiene has to start young. Just remember to practice what you preach, and there’ll be great family teeth all around.
