Supporting Your Partner After They Have Lost a Parent

The pain of losing a parent is one that cannot be understated, and can only truly be understood once you have experienced it for yourself. It is an overwhelming and challenging time, and a time when you need your loved ones to be supportive, helpful and a positive influence. You can quickly find yourself swamped with responsibilities, and you will need your partner to be there for you most of all.

For a partner, seeing their loved one going through such a traumatic experience can be tough. You can feel helpless and separated from them, and this can lead to you taking a backward step when you should be moving forward to take care of them. Here are some useful tips on how to support a partner in the aftermath of them losing a parent.

Be There

The most obvious, and not to mention vital, advice anybody can give when dealing with a partner’s grief is just to be there. You can be as forthcoming or in the background as you like with your support, but your partner should be well aware that you are there to be a shoulder to cry on, or to rely upon for any tasks that they may not be feeling up to doing. Simple tasks such as making phone calls and informing friends and family are enough. It’s incredible how much time and energy you can save your partner by doing this, as it will save them having to keep going through their grief when they should be processing it.

At such a difficult time, it can be easy to smother your partner or become distant as you are unsure just how much your partner wants you around. The best course of action in this instance is simply to listen to what they have to say. If they want to be left alone, give them a little space, and at the same time, if they need you, do lend your support in any way, whether it is emotional support or some tasks need doing. Be prepared to listen and be as helpful as you can. They will thank you for it as time passes and their grief begins to settle.

Take Them Out of Themselves for a While

Once you are in a position to know that your partner is ready to go out and face the outside world, it is a good idea to take them out of themselves for a while. It could mean anything from visiting a museum to having a day out at the zoo, but it definitely needs to be fun and constructive. Something challenging like the Escape Room Milwaukee is popular for would be good. It’s a fun and challenging exercise where you team up to solve mysteries and tasks, within a 60-minute time limit. It could be a great way to get them smiling again while being challenging enough to get them to concentrate on something other than their loss.

Help Them To Focus

Being a supportive partner is much more than being an arm around a shoulder, it is about being able to help your grieving partner to focus on what needs doing in the aftermath of losing a parent. For example, if your mother or father is now widowed, you can steer your partner towards helping them arrange the funeral, organize their finances and any insurance policies that need to be looked at, and help them focus on what needs to be done in the aftermath. It can be tricky and difficult, but it’s essential that grief doesn’t take over their life.

Choosing to Live a Fearless Life

Going about your daily business and pondering why things end up so messy and chaotic sometimes can really play tricks on your emotions. The stress, trials, and limitations of our world here on Earth can be bitter and cruel in more ways than one.  Searching for the answers to heal the hurt inside by pouring abnormally long hours into your job, avoiding friends or family,  turning to alcohol, drugs, or sex out of marriage isn’t the answer.  This world doesn’t offer the hope you need to calm the storms of life, but there is someone who can – Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

You CAN find hope and the real courage to face the trials and dangers of this world.

Giving your daily cares to the Lord in prayer and searching His Word in the Bible for the answers you seek is a great way to begin lightening the load. So many times I meet people that cross my path who have no idea how to heal the hurt inside. These individuals have never really heard the Gospel explained to know who Jesus is. They don’t understand that the Bible’s words are Truth and can guide us towards the Light and Love that God is. Jesus is the answer to heal our troubled minds and help us find courage to face tomorrow. Wouldn’t you like to find this kind of healing freedom and relief to make life worth living?

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” 1 Peter 1:3

I urge you my friends to seek out those you know who are strong in their faith. They can guide you to a church pastor or leader that knows the truth of God’s Word and can help set you free of the burdens you carry through leading you to Salvation through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I welcome you to reach out to me here or through my Facebook page at I’ll be happy to discuss ways to encourage you in your faith and learn how to walk with Christ daily.

Today’s world is falling apart and I am so distressed with what our world is becoming. Don’t let the chaos surrounding you take hold and influence you in a negative way. Get a tighter grip on your own faith and relationship with Jesus now, so as the enemy wreaks havoc on our world you will be able to stand strong and be a beacon of hope for your family, your children, friends and all those you come in contact with.

For those who are being a lighthouse and beacon to the world already – I applaud you! Our nation and our world need more LIGHT to spread across the lands. You and I have a duty and a calling to reach the lost, the oppressed, the hurting, the weak in spirit, and still strengthen each other to run the race and finish it well in God’s eyes. Will you join me? Comment below if you want to strengthen your walk and be a light to others in Jesus Name.

Remembering 9/11 on 15 Year Anniversary

ground-zero-1425044_1280On September 11, 2001, lives were changed forever. That was the day that almost 3,000 people lost their lives, including many service men and women that were trying to help. As we reach this day, the 15th anniversary of this tragedy, it is important to remember and keep in prayer all those people and their families.

While so many lives were lost when hijackers crashed planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, it is also important to remember the heroes that tried to help.

This includes not only the firefighters, policemen (and women), and military personnel, but also the men and women upon board United Airlines Flight 93. These brave men and women lost their lives trying to save others.

This is what we should remember when we think of the tragedy, not the hatred. Yes, too many people died that day. However, it brought us closer as a country and proved how much we care for one another. People from all over the United States traveled to New York after the attacks to help however they could. People donated their time and money for the chance that they could ease the pain of the survivors just the slightest bit.

So today, offer up a moment of silence for those lost on that day. Remember to hold your loved ones near. Remember to pray for the families of the fallen and to give thanks for those that survived that day. God obviously has a wonderful plan in store for them. Remember not just the tragedy of 9/11, but also the faith, hope, and love that came out of it.

I Am Not Ashamed by PureFlix In Theaters October 21

Time heals many things, but one of the most excruciating situations to heal from is having to pick up the pieces of your broken heart and find healing after the loss of a child. Some of you may remember the tragic events that took place many years ago involving Columbine High School. It is with passion and purpose that I try to bring you the very best in Christian entertainment, resources and tools to help you and your family walk in boldness and light in today’s world. One of these great ministry tools and entertainment is the new movie from PureFlix releasing in theaters this fall on October 21 titled: I Am Not Ashamed. Don’t miss the giveaway below for a goodie bag from the screener!

This film has an incredible message to share with the millions of unchurched teens that exist in America and around the world today. It also shares a message of hope, forgiveness, compassion, and purpose for all those who would join the new movement and rise to the call to say, “I Am Hope”. Let’s all be the HOPE that today’s world needs to experience by living with Jesus Christ shining from within our hearts and being His hands and feet to the masses.

“I Am Not Ashamed” shares the inspiring true story of Rachel Joy Scott.  Rachel Joy Scott is portrayed by actress Masey McLain in the film. Rachel’s story unfolds through a series of life experiences revealing the struggles of an every day teen life in and out of school. Laced through these choices, struggles, and various experiences we soon see the beauty of her heart for Jesus come shining through as she realizes what she truly wants and needs. Somewhere towards the second half of the film is where it really starts to show us great examples of Rachel’s genuine love and concern for others as she eventually dared to “walk the talk” of a Christian life in front of her entire study body at Columbine High School before the tragedy occurs.

The various elements in this film to be leery of for younger audiences are those wrapped around the potential situations a teen could be confronted with such as smoking, drinking alcohol, the general party atmosphere, and other adult situations. “I Am Not Ashamed” is rated PG-13 and parents of children under 13 need to consider treating it as such due to both these elements as well as those involved with the short but necessary scenes showing the tragedy that occurs at Columbine High School.

This film is an excellent resource for teens to watch to help empower them to live REAL for Jesus and not to bend under the pressures of teen lifestyles and worldliness. Rachel’s choices in the film show how important being real and living for Jesus truly is and how much of an impact students can have on each other in school and with anyone they meet.

Because of how quickly today’s society is forcing our young adults into these difficult types of situations and environments, I would even consider recommending parents to potentially show this film to preteens. I would only do so with the approval of a parent who has already watched “I Am Not Ashamed” and is prepared to talk about the situations involved following the movie. You can learn more about this film and potentially find additional resources to help you with this at the “I Am Not Ashamed” website.

“I Am Not Ashamed” is a movie that will reach hearts and lives all over the world, and it is definitely something I believe is worth seeing and showing to teen student audiences and above.  I urge the churches, schools, and other organizations to strongly consider having the entire study body or youth groups watch this film together and have a discussion session following with administrators, teachers, youth leaders, and/or counselors on hand.

My 18 yr old son accompanied me to this early movie screener for “I Am Not Ashamed” and he thoroughly enjoyed the film and felt it will have a huge impact on teens.

In closing, I wish to applaud the courage of the family of Rachel Joy Scott , her friends, and the other families who’s children and teacher were tragically killed during the massacre at Columbine High School. This film is going to be a light to the world, and will hopefully honor the memories and sweet lives of those students and the teacher who lost their lives on April 20, 1999.  May God continue to use you with your own powerful testimony, and the testimony shared through this film to reach more teens for Christ. May God bless you richly.

22 Helpful Ways to Give Hope in a Crisis

Our Thoughts Are With Orlando

There are times like these when I wish I had unlimited resources to be a shining bright light or blessing in the lives of those I don’t even know. The world is going through so many tragic and horrible circumstances and trials – even in my own backyard of Orlando. In this week alone,  we’ve felt the unbelievable sadness that continues to unfold for all these families as the world mourns the loss of 50+ individuals who were murdered by a terrorist or hate crime act at an Orlando night club and left 50+ others injured fighting for their lives as well. Then just a few days ago we’ve seen the devastating horror story of a 2 yr old boy killed by an alligator attack at a local resort theme park. These nightmares are very real for these families and it pains me to not have the means or opportunity to help them.

Have You Ever Wished You Could Help Others In A Crisis?

It got me thinking though. How often do people feel helpless when sincerely wanting to assist and comfort those going through a difficult trial or tragic crisis? I’m sure we all feel that way! I prayed about all the ways I know  of and have used in the past to help others and bring hope and a blessing to their lives during difficult circumstances. You’ll find a bunch of them here today in the list below. May they guide you to giving HOPE to someone in need.

Maybe you know someone locally going through a serious crisis like this, trauma, health issues, job loss, or loss of a loved one? Know that you have the ability to help get involved in one of these families lives and encourage, support, and comfort them in a critical moment in their lives. As Christians, we have the blessing of hope that comes from knowing Christ as Savior and Lord. Be that light of hope to others today and find a way to share God’s love in a real way in someone’s life who isn’t going to reach out to you – you have to recognize their need and reach out to them.

22 Helpful Ways to Give Hope in a Crisis

Here are 22 practical ways to give hope and help to someone in need during difficult or tragic circumstances:

  1. Pray for them
  2. Be a listening ear and let them talk through what’s happened
  3. Text, call, or email them and let them know you are praying for them and are available to help in any way. Don’t expect them to respond. Sometimes just knowing others are thinking of them is enough and they may not have time to respond to hundreds of messages right away
  4. Bring them a meal or dessert
  5. Bring paper products (the basics) such as toilet paper, paper towels, paper plates, paper/plastic cups, plastic cutlery
  6. Send a card or deliver in person and put your phone number and email offering them to contact you if they need ANYTHING
  7. Offer to babysit their kids so the adults can get a nap, mental break, run errands etc. without kids in tow, or go on a much needed date with their spouse or partner
  8. Offer to treat them to lunch or a movie with you to get out of the house and take their mind off things and unwind for a short breather
  9. Donate funds to any Go Fund Me account set up to help support the family during a tragic event or health crisis
  10. Offer to help create a Go Fund Me account on their behalf if they have not made one already
  11. Send an encouraging devotional or Christian book, Christian DVD, or Christian music CD from your local Christian book store or online store. Attach a note or tell them to specifically read a certain chapter you liked, or particular song from the CD that will personalize it for them and encourage them to take the time to watch/listen/or read the item. This can help give hope straight from God’s word through the book/DVD/CD without quoting them scripture directly yourself if that is something that makes them uncomfortable (which may happen with someone who is a non-believer or if they are angry with God at the moment from misdirected anger due to the circumstances surrounding them.)
  12. Send flowers, or deliver a home-made gift of baked goods to bring a smile
  13. Offer to come over for a cup of coffee and a chat, but show up with cleaning supplies prepared to clean their house for them, lawn care equipment prepared to mow their lawn and trim hedges or edge, bring groceries and offer to cook them a meal
  14. Bring already prepared meals marked with labels and instructions for heating to put in their fridge or freezer to get them through a couple of days
  15. Deliver in person or send gift cards by mail for gas stations, and also for fast food restaurants located inside the hospital or near where they live
  16. Send gift cards for a hair cut/color/highlights, a spa experience or massage, a mani/pedi, or other pampering gift/service that could lift their spirits, but they may not normally spend the money on themselves
  17. Give them a Bible if they don’t already have one and a note suggesting where to start reading first
  18. Bible promises books with lists of topical themes and the verses from the Bible that correspond to those topics are a great mini book to carry in a purse or briefcase. These are something  someone could have at their bedside in the hospital to bring hope and encouragement
  19. Invite them to join you for church and offer to take them to lunch afterwards or over to your home for lunch. Let them spend time sharing about the experience they’re going through and really listen for ways you can truly help
  20. Offer to go to their home and feed or walk their pets
  21. Offer to help with clerical services for their home business or assist on their farm if they need it temporarily during this difficult time
  22. When the pain has passed and they are in the time period of healing: Find an appropriate way to make them laugh. Laughter heals – but there is a time for it.  Wait until you know they are ready to receive a welcome distraction from their grief.

“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” – Proverbs 17:22

In Luke 6:31, it shares a great rule to keep in mind with all things. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Think about placing yourself in their shoes. What would you wish someone could come do for you to be a blessing and help you breathe a little easier and comfort you through this terrible time of crisis? If you can relate to what they are going through, I’m sure God will inspire you to come up with many more wonderful ways to be a blessing and give hope and help to the people in your life going through a crisis or trial too. Please share with us in the comments any suggestions you have for people to try in being a blessing to someone during trials. Thanks in advance for your great advice!

We trust God and realize He shall never leave us or abandon us – no matter how difficult the circumstances may seem. Love the New Album by Je’kob: This Side of the Sky #Review #Giveaway

What a delight it was to be enjoying some quality time with my family and friends visiting while we relaxed in the resort over Thanksgiving break. God’s great blessings come in many forms and shapes, and for me ..anything that forces me to stop being “busy” and relax is always a good thing. One of the greatest things that helps me relax is the chance to listen to some awesome tunes in Christian music.

My family needs to hear music often. My kids are literally driven by their love for singing and dancing and even playing or writing their own music on keyboard. It has been a fun adventure watching them develop their skills and love for music. We only play Christian music for them 99% of the time, so getting my hands on some top albums from a variety of Christian artists is very important to me. Today, I’m excited to share the cool and charming, family friendly sounds of Je’kob! Here is a songwriter you don’t want to miss! He has a unique way of sharing what God lays on his heart and mixing it with the most delightful arrangements in music.

I was very impressed by this album called “This Side of the Sky ” by Je’kob. The whole family and some friends that were visiting enjoyed listening to it as we played some board games over the Thanksgiving break. We found the title song, “This Side of the Sky” and “Letting Go” to be some of our favorites, and loved the video on YouTube as well. Watch this video of “Letting Go” and make sure to read the credits in the message at the very end. It will help you appreciate the song so much more. What a great way to honor our loved ones.

Five Stars for Je’kob’s new album “This Side of the Sky”! I hope you’ll support his ministry and pick up a copy for yourself or a friend today.

Thanksgiving Blessings

Thanksgiving is a time of year when people tend to stop and go out of their way to remember to be thankful. What a great holiday! I can’t begin to explain the joy in my heart when I look back at all that God has ever done for me and my family. It’s something I try to do throughout the year quite often as it helps keep us humble and appreciative of all things. Have you ever stopped to reflect on your year, your month, your week and taken a look at it through eyes of appreciation and thankfulness? We have so much to give thanks for on a daily basis. Hold dear your family and friends and make the most of each opportunity.

This post goes out in honor of three dear family members who went home to be with the Lord this year: Uncle Joe, Aunt Kathy and Joe S. We love and miss you all.

There are numerous ways to show our thanks to others in our lives, but how do you like to show thanks to God, our Heavenly Father? Would you write a list of all the things you’re thankful for and share it with the family and in a prayer to the Lord at Thanksgiving dinner? Maybe you like to write poems or sing a song through a heart of thanks to God?  I’d absolute love to hear from you in the comments below and express your favorite ways to show or give thanks to God for all He has done for you and your family.
Let’s learn from the inspiration of others and begin a new trend … being creative in our ability to show God true thanks. Doesn’t He deserve our efforts?

As I give thanks this week over the Thanksgiving break, I will be listing many different giveaways as a way to say thank you to you too – my dear readers, for always being so supportive of me and this blog at Love2EncourageYou. Many thanks to each of you, and prayers that God would bless you all in a mighty way. May you be empowered and chosen to serve Him for His glory.
