Reading Rainbow’s Skybrary App Can Help Improve Reading Skills

IMG_2202I can’t wait to tell you about two great Reading Rainbow products – the new DVD “Animal Cafe,” and a new online offering called SKYBRARY! The new DVD, features four episodes from the classic PBS series, while the new web-based SKYBRARY provides access to children’s books and story-driven educational video field trips (500+ books, 150+ video field trips). Your kids or students in school are going to love them both!

IMG_2204First let me share about the incredible Skybrary App or Online site where your kids can read, be read to, watch virtual field trip videos, and interact with cool effects within the books they’re reading! My daughter was so excited when I told her we get to have a subscription to the Reading Rainbow Skybrary app that she jumped up on my lap and hugged me! lol.

IMG_2225She had tried the awesome 14 day free trial before and was so sad when her time was up. This Skybrary experience is a must have for homeschoolers, or parents who wish to give their kids the opportunity to enjoy learning and reading on a daily basis through all the terrific books, videos and interactions on this site. You can use Skybrary on your computer, tablet, phone or other mobile device.

IMG_2227I highly recommend at least trying the 14 day free trial, but believe me … investing the small subscription price is well worth it! My kids are glued to reading right now! They were so drawn in by all the fun stories and videos that they sat as close as they could next to each other so they can see what the other was currently reading and check out two fun books at once! Too cute!

My four year old is now walking around the house telling us about Giant Pandas and Red Pandas eating bamboo 12 hours a day and how cute they are when the cubs roar. Check out this YouTube video I made of my 4 yr old imitating the panda cub on the Reading Rainbow Skybrary App!

IMG_2229The Skybrary experience allows the child to choose their own personal interests for books such as princesses, animals, vehicles, and more. They can even choose a themed “backpack” to store their chosen books in that they checked out and then return their books to the book return when they are done. You can see in the picture that my daughter chose the pretty pink princess backback for hers.

There is even a sticker rewards section that gives the students virtual stickers (after reading a book) that they can drag and place on different themed “islands” to decorate them. My four year old really loves this option and keeps wanting to read more books to earn more stickers! Yay!

I am so grateful for this amazing Skybrary subscription! It has been fun to see the kids blossoming in their reading skills while using it so often. They just LOVE using Skybrary!

My four year old uses the “Read to Me” feature, while my daughter switches often from “Read it myself” to the “Read to Me” feature and vice versa. She even has her little brother sit next to her and reads the story to him and lets him press the swirling spots on the pages that are interactive and they both giggle together watching the motion or action it created.

animal cafe

Now to share about the fun-filled and educational DVD called “Animal Cafe” by Reading Rainbow with La Var Burton! This DVD is a great Back to School item to have on hand for showing to students in your homeschool or classroom. I personally love reading quality books and Reading Rainbow does a tremendous job choosing the finest, high quality and award winning books to present to their readers and listeners during the Reading Rainbow DVD episodes.

These animated stories often feature a main message such as good morals and values, friendship, etc. and they usually have La Var introduce the story in a fun and unique way then he sums it up again at the end. My son and daughter like watching these before bedtime and also during homeschool time when I need them to have a good educational transition activity to calm them down from recess time outdoors or when I’m introducing a new theme in one of our subjects like reading or history.

This new “Animal Cafe” DVD we got to review is a fun filled and educational! LaVar Burton helps kids engage with this entertaining video by introducing each concept or lesson within it and the book the idea or story originates from.  The interesting and sometimes even comical mini lessons he acts out during the episodes can be quite funny, but always worth watching and listening to the point in the story.  One of our favorite episodes was the first one which takes us behind the scenes in areas of NY city and other great learning experiences. The kids were fascinated learning about bats, and the fish markets in NY.

These episodes are filled with suggestions on wonderful books that are packed with educational tidbits on these subjects. I really enjoyed the presentation of each episode and have always felt Reading Rainbow does a fabulous job providing top quality educational entertainment for kids of all ages.

Don’t miss starting the new school year off right and picking up a copy of the “Animal Cafe” DVD by Reading Rainbow for your kids or your classroom (if you’re a teacher). I highly recommend purchasing 6 months or a year’s worth of Skybrary App to enjoy throughout the months and watch your kids imaginations and interest in reading soar!

New DVD – “Reading Rainbow: Animal Café”
The four episodes and books featured in this DVD are “Animal Cafe,” read by Martin Short, “The Tortoise and the Hare,” read by Gilda Radner, “Ludlow Laughs,” read by Phyllis Diller, and “Giving Thanks: A Native American Good Morning Message,” read by Nicholson Earl Billey. Airing on PBS from 1983-2009, and hosted by LeVar Burton (“Roots,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation”) for its entire 26-year run, the program garnered more than 200 awards, including 26 Emmys and a Peabody Award. To learning about comedy in one episode, to profiling people who have occupations in the evening and early morning in another, LeVar takes children on fun-filled learning adventures they won’t forget.
“Animal Café” will be available at Target and other retailers starting June 30, 2015. The DVD run time is approximately 120 minutes and its SRP is $6.99. This DVD is available from PBS Distribution.

It’s Here Math Fans! The new Peg + Cat Rocks! DVD #Review

Just released! The newest DVD of Peg + Cat! You’re going to love this creative and fun-loving collection of episodes from PBSKids big hit show Peg + Cat! My kids adore all the comical phrases and silly antics of Peg + Cat!  They share ways to count by tens and ones and help children grasp the concepts of counting in higher numbers with ease. You won’t be disappointed with this newest edition in the collection of Peg + Cat DVDs titled: Peg + Cat Peg Rocks – Solving Really Big Math Problems! It literally does ROCK! We love it!!

As a homeschool mom and wife to a Math teacher, naturally I absolutely give a huge thumbs up for anything Math related and this new Peg + Cat Peg Rocks DVD offers sound instruction in a fun and engaging way that kids can understand and absorb. A big thumbs up from me! But don’t just take my word for it, here it from the real source and critics for kids cartoons – kids! Here’s my daughter’s review in her own words:

I Do What I Can – The Musical is my favorite episode! It features 23 tunes for this amazing Peg + Cat cartoon. It teaches about counting by 30 by 2s. It can also probably teach you a few things about good deeds.

The Girl Group Problem episode teaches about different shapes such as pentagon, triangles and rectangles. It can also teach the meanings of tough words such as upside down, flip over, slide and turn around.

In the Mega Mall Problem episode it teaches about attributes and how to recognize them. Attributes used in the episode were pink, circle and trapezoid. Peg + Cat use them to find the teens in time for their performance in the mall – the zebra guy show.

I recommend this new DVD because it’s amazing and has lots of new episodes! I love to dance to the songs! I hope you like it.

Dolphin Tale 2 Homeschool Curriculum Review and Promo Pack Giveaway

Come out and support this wonderful film – Dolphin Tale 2! #DolphinTale2 #WinterHasHope!

Greetings friends! If you loved the first Dolphin Tale movie, you will want to get out and see the sequel! We were given the chance to review the delightful homeschool curriculum designed for the film through HomeschoolMovieClub.com. We also received an adorable promo pack with a Dolphin Tale 2 T-shirt and sunglasses in exchange for an honest review. Special thanks to Homeschool Movie Club and Flyby Promotions for the opportunity. YOU can enter to WIN a promo pack too! (Check details and enter at bottom of post.)

Homeschoolers and educators alike will have fun pouring into the 5 different lessons available in this unique Dolphin Tale 2 curriculum. My daughter is 7 yrs old and loves dolphins. Given the opportunity to visit SeaWorld often from living in Orlando, FL – we have had our share of amazing dolphin encounters. The first film really captured the essence of falling in love with the incredible personality and charm that dolphins have. I am sure after reviewing this curriculum that Dolphin Tale 2 has done a fantastic job grabbing our hearts again with the dolphin’s tenderness and devotion.

We enjoyed watching the mini videos before each lesson and found a lot of the information shared to be very helpful in understanding more about dolphins. We give this curriculum a big thumbs up for family appeal and user friendliness. Be sure to read more details below about the upcoming film Dolphin Tale 2:

About the movie:

Inspired by true events, Dolphin Tale 2 continues the story of the brave dolphin Winter, whose miraculous rescue and recovery—thanks to a groundbreaking prosthetic tail—made her a symbol of hope and perseverance to people around the world and inspired the 2011 family hit movie “Dolphin Tale.” This film reunites the entire main cast, led by Harry Connick Jr., Oscar winner Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Kris Kristofferson, and of course, the remarkable dolphin Winter as herself. Champion surfer Bethany Hamilton, who has been an example of courage, also appears in the film.

It has been several years since young Sawyer Nelson and the dedicated team at the Clearwater Marine Hospital, headed by Dr. Clay Haskett, rescued Winter. With the help of Dr. Cameron McCarthy, who developed a unique prosthetic tail for the injured dolphin, they were able to save her life. Yet their fight is not over. Winter’s surrogate mother, the very elderly dolphin Panama, has passed away, leaving Winter without the only pool mate she has ever known. However, the loss of Panama may have greater repercussions for Winter, who, according to USDA regulations, cannot be housed alone, as dolphins’ social behavior requires them to be paired with other dolphins. Time is running out to find a companion for her before the team at Clearwater loses their beloved Winter to another aquarium.

Prize: One winner will receive a Dolphin Tale 2 Promo Pack which includes a T-shirt and sunglasses!

Date: September 12, 2014 to September 23, 2014.

Open to USA & Canada. Must be 18 yrs or older to enter. Void where prohibited.

Kids Learn All Sorts of Math Concepts

What an adorable and thoroughly entertaining children’s animated DVD! “Peg + Cat: Chickens On The Loose And Other Really Big Problems ” by PBS KIDS  is a fun, witty and educational show that leaves both kids and adults laughing and singing along to the show.

101A_PEG CAT_TheChickenProblem

What’s so special about Peg + Cat: Chickens On The Loose And Other Really Big Problems? For starters, kids learn all sorts of math concepts in a fun sing-a-long sort of way while watching Peg + Cat dance a jig, chase chickens and other silly antics. My children are big on singing and dancing and they ADORE this show! It’s also filled with humor and clever visual comedy that bring a smile throughout the video. The appeal with this cartoon is so contagious, even I can’t help laughing and finding myself absorbed into the Peg + Cat show too. If you have little ones that love to learn, enjoy a good laugh and find cats, pigs, chickens, dinosaurs, pirates and giants to be interesting characters to watch – then make sure to pick up your copy of Peg + Cat on DVD when it releases in September! Watch this cute clip below to take a sneak peak!

My favorite part of this great children’s DVD would be all the fantastic math lessons that are so cleverly introduced, repeated and summarized by the time the episode wraps up at the end. Your children will learn counting into the teen digits, counting to 100, proper size, addition facts to 10, counting backwards by 5’s, skip counting by twos, geometric shapes, learning to count floors/levels in a building, lengths, problem solving skills, and so much more! It is a series of helpful math lessons all packaged into one super fun video learning experience! Just like PBS KIDS to create such a phenomenal children’s program that is not only lots of fun, but full of educational value that parents and teachers can approve of.

My family gives Peg + Cat: Chickens On The Loose And Other Really Big Problems DVD a 5 Star rating for family fun and educational value in math, problem solving, and the value of friendship. Not to mention it’s really funny! 🙂

My kids say their favorite part is when Peg sings, “I’ve got chickens all over me”. lol. She literally has a ton of little chicks sitting on her head and shoulders in that scene. So cute!

PBS Nature: Leave It To Beavers DVD #Review #Giveaway

Calling all Nature fans! Homeschoolers, Educators, teachers, kids, parents,  and lovers of nature or lovers of beavers – it’s time to experience and appreciate the incredible lives of beavers in “Leave It To Beavers” DVD from the PBS nature series!

Disclosure: Special thanks to PBS Distribution for allowing me to review this wonderful film with my family in exchange for an honest review.

Amidst their own natural settings where wildlife thrive, this amazing documentary video about the lives of beavers is both extremely informative and very entertaining. Both my younger children (ages 3 and 7 yrs) watched the video along with me during this review.  I was so impressed at how well it kept their attention, and it created questions in their minds that sparked interest and imagination and that leads to real learning. My 7 yr old was completely chatty and interactive throughout the entire video! She even got out all their little animal figures and started role playing scenes from the movie. I love to see a video encourage their imaginations and promote that kind of active play.

You literally will fall in love with beavers by watching this “Leave It To Beavers” DVD! You experience each stage of a beaver’s life, witness their breath-taking talents in engineering, and are moved by the amazing stories shared by trappers, and rehab specialists who help injured beavers recover and get introduced back into the wild. It is truly a sight to see!

I’m really not sure what my favorite part of the film was because there are just so many fascinating facts, gorgeous scenes and landscapes, adorable close-ups of both beavers and other wild life in their natural setting – plus many heart-warming stories to be enjoyed during this “Leave It To Beavers” nature video by PBS Distribution. We absolutely loved this DVD from start to finish! A must see!

My family gives this “Leave It To Beavers” DVD a 5 star rating for excellence in education and entertainment! Way to go, PBS!!

Here are a few facts from the official press release:

***PBS Distribution has released “NATURE: LEAVE IT TO BEAVERS” on DVD July 8. The beaver, more than any other animal, is responsible for creating fertile landscapes across North America, but it hasn’t gotten much recognition for that accomplishment until now. A growing number of scientists, conservationists and grass-roots environmentalists have come to regard beavers as overlooked tools in reversing the effects of global warming and world-wide water shortages. These industrious rodents are adept at controlling water and have been doing so for thousands of years. LEAVE IT TO BEAVERS tells the story of beavers in North America – their history, their near extinction, and their current comeback as modern day eco-heroes.

LEAVE IT TO BEAVERS” is currently available on DVD. The run time of this program is approximately 60 minutes. The DVD SRP is $19.99. The program will also be available for digital download.

Millions of beavers once dominated the landscapes of Europe, Asia and North America. But when it was discovered that their fur made fantastic felt hats they were trapped to near extinction for the sake of fashion. It wasn’t until hats fell out of style that the population could slowly begin to recover and re-establish itself.

Yet as beavers reclaimed their ancestral ponds, they found themselves at odds with the humans who had moved in and developed the land in their absence. They gained a reputation as pests, the source of flooded properties and ruined roads, and were trapped and hunted all over again in an attempt to stop the damage. But it was a war the beavers continued to win, until a “beaver whisperer” in Canada came up with a plan to manipulate where the beavers built. It’s a win-win solution he plans to share with others who fight a losing war with beavers.

Beavers are devoted to their work as dam builders and they are born equipped and ready for the job. Their continuously growing, self-sharpening incisors strengthened with iron are the perfect tools of the trade. Not only do they help beavers fell the hundreds of trees they need to dam a river, they also come in handy for meals because beavers are vegetarians that gnaw through bark to eat the sugary layer underneath.

Every beaver family works together to build their dams of stone, logs and mud.  They erect sturdy lodges with secret entrances and exits and excavate deep channels in ponds that help retain water in arid environments. And as they work, broad meadows, rich with silt, and new ponds are created.

By the 1990s, scientists began to notice and investigate the effects beavers were having on the landscape and to document the results. A dramatic example is what happened to Nevada’s Suzie Creek, transformed by beavers from a desert to a veritable garden supporting wildlife such as sandhill cranes and mule deer.

LEAVE IT TO BEAVERS” introduces viewers to an animal rehab expert who teaches a rescued orphan beaver the skills he’ll need to survive in the wild, and to hairdresser Sherri Tippie, the top live trapper of the species in North America, who rescues unwanted beavers in the Denver suburbs and then places them with farmers and beaver enthusiasts who eagerly provide new homes for them. Whether displaced from their pond, now part of a new housing development, or singled out for gnawing on trees at a golf course, Tippie has relocated over 1,000 beavers to date and her chief priority remains to keep families together. According to Tippie, “We’re asking so much of these animals and we’re displacing them. They’ve moved into a place where they should be and we don’t want them there. So if we’re going to mess around with them then we need to treat them as well as possible and then put them at a place where they can live out their lives.”  ***

Disneynature – Explore App: Disney Magic At It’s Best!

Experience the wonder of nature

Here’s a noteworthy app to get for your kids or to play yourself! The new Disneynature – Explore app from iTunes was created just in time to enhance the new Disneynature Bear movie coming out soon. You start your adventure with a bear as it asks you to roar like a bear or even grunt. Next it will have you trying to catch fish in a stream with the bear. My kids were completely captivated by it’s use of both the microphone and the camera to interact with the game. You can choose your activities, go on missions and more to learn all about these beautiful creatures!

Great Educational Value

The game proceeds to have butterflies, chimpanzees, lions and other unique animals as it asks you to get up and move around the room or outside in your yard as it asks you to search for things. It gives directions such as left or right, asks you to take pictures of things that are certain colors, and even has you aim at the sky to see tons of butterflies in the sky or on your ceiling.  It has a wonderful educational value! Disneynature – Explore app would be a good addition to a homeschool science program as it also includes tons of tips and info about the animals you are discovering. It even includes a journal mode that would be good for older students.

Play With Supervision

This free Disneynature – Explore app is greatly entertaining for young and old and will be lots of fun both indoors and outdoors – provided you have an adult watching the child at all times. WARNING: This app can cause you to get distracted by the commands and you wouldn’t want a child to walk towards danger because they are so involved in playing the app. Disney stresses that a child must be supervised while playing this app and that needs to be heeded for safety reasons.

Highly Recommended Free App

It is still amazing to me what technology can do and how many fun ways you can create an interactive environment for children to learn and explore and enjoy God’s creation. My kids really love all the unique ways you get to interact both indoors and out with this Disneynature – Explore app. They especially enjoyed the chance to earn pins for discovering different animals or accomplishing missions. Disney really hit a home run with this app! Love it! I highly recommend trying this completely free app called Disneynature – Explore today! Visit your iTunes store and search for “Disneynature – Explore“.

If you enjoyed this app review, please follow us on social media and subscribe to our newsletter. We will have more enjoyable posts about apps for children and families to come. Thanks for reading! *Sponsors that have apps related to children, family, business or education, feel free to contact me about a review.

Minecraft Mania Hits Our Home

The Minecraft Video Game Has Multiplayer Benefits

Minecraft is a unique and addicting game that offers lots of opportunity for families to enjoy many different modes of play. You can interact with the game in creative or survival mode and choose between peaceful, easy, normal or hard option levels. What a sheer bonus to finally find a family friendly game that offers the choice to work individually or as a team! Minecraft allows up to 4 players at a time in this creative and fun multiplayer game.

It has been a truly pleasant experience watching my oldest son (16 yrs) play the Minecraft online game through Playstation 3 with his friends from all over the country who can join him in a specific game if he wishes to share it. They collaborate to scour the map to all four corners as they search for treasures in the mines or villages. All the while, these guys are getting to fight off the bad guys and mobs of zombies, skeletons, spiders and more that attempt to knock down their health or worse.

Are You a Minecraft Mom or Dad?

As any good mom would do, I try to keep on top of the games my son has interest in playing and when invited to join him and his friends for a game…well, I couldn’t resist. I admit it took a little getting used to how to view and control all the buttons as you have to get comfortable using them rather quickly if you want to literally survive in survival mode.

Right along with the teens enthusiasm for the game is my 7 yr old daughter who thinks the game is so cool that she plays with us too and even cheers her brother on when only he is playing. It is very easy to learn and has been great having the option to use host privileges such as invisibility or flying to help my daughter overcome her initial fear of facing some of the monsters that come out at night. Of course that is easily solved by simply collecting wood and wool to make a bed and making sure each player goes to bed at night in the game. Minecraft will then jump your character right to morning again so you avoid having all the monsters around like at night.

Minecraft can be a fascinating bit of entertainment to the point where even my husband and I have even enjoyed many evenings playing the game alone together …venturing out to attack the monster generators in the mines and find a way to survive as a team. Guys seem to naturally like the challenge of mining for the “good stuff” as far as searching for iron, emeralds, diamonds, gold, lapis lazuli and redstone in the deep caverns throughout the game. I personally enjoy the “fishing” part of the game as well as breeding the animals, or creating and maintaining farms and trading with the villagers. No matter what role you play in this game, there is certainly enough adventure and fun to go around for any personality type. My hubby seems to look forward to me joining him in the game as it is easier to accomplish more goals when two or more go into the same game seed together. Brave all odds this week and invite your hubby to a game of Minecraft. Once you both get used to the controls…it can real be quite fun and addicting to play together!

Education Value in Minecraft

There is a lot to be said for seeing your family or your child and a bunch of their friends learning to work as a team to survive in this game. It has so much potential for teaching many different things to kids from a homeschool parent’s perspective too. My next Minecraft post will share more about creative mode, trading with the villagers, and explaining some of the many ways Minecraft has educational value for the players such as creative logic and problem solving. I hope you’ll join us for our future series of posts called “Minecraft Mondays”. Want to learn more about this video game now?
